Baseball Hall of Fame, Cooperstown, NY
When I was a kid my family took a trip to Lake George and on our way home we swung through Cooperstown so my dad could visit the baseball hall of fame and see his hero - Ted Williams. That trip has stood out in all of my siblings’ minds for all the things that went wrong.
We were camping at Lake George with my grandparents and it POURED every day. When we went to Cooperstown we arrived 40 minutes before the museum closed so they would not let us enter except to see the foyer. (THANK GOD, at that time Ted Williams exhibit was housed in a display case in the foyer.) By the time we left it was 6pm and four kids under 12 were tired and hungry. Finally found a restaurant, sat down to order and immediately after being served a large glass of milk went flying covering the food. Then it was time to look for a place to stay because we had no reservations. After driving to every hotel and finding no vacancies we ended up at a dingy, dirty hotel on the freeway outside Albany where my mother covered the floor with newspaper so we did not touch the carpet. Oh those memories. This visit was different.
Now you need a timed entry to enter the museum. It’s three floors jammed packed with memorabilia, great photos, lots of statistics and videos. There is also a half hour movie with interviews with some of the greats talking about what the game meant to them. It’s also one of the few museums I’ve visited where the ratio of men visitors far exceeded the females.
I went looking for things that interested me. Rhode Island connections, Red Sox facts, women involved in the sport and some Dodger “stuff.” I also have to add that I was fascinated by how many times I saw Pete Rose’s photo on display at the museum. Considering they refuse to induct him because of his gambling issues, he holds quite a few records that can’t be denied. No matter what you think of his gambling. He was an amazing player and no one worked harder that Pete Rose.
In no particular order here’s what I found.
Rhode Island:
Women in the sport:
Red Sox stuff:
Pete Rose:
Miscellaneous:
Really fun time finally getting yo see the museum. Fun fact- you can stand in front of a green screen and have a baseball card made with your image.
