Saint Urho the patron saint of Finland

While on our travels we have been relying on several apps to help us find everything from campgrounds to food. We found one app that allows you to plot your route and then shows you “interesting” things to see on your route. That’s how we found Saint Urho who was on our route back to our campground from Bemidji.

Many of the inhabitants of northern Minnesota have descended from immigrants from Scandinavia.  Saint Urho, as the legend goes saved Finland from an invasion of locusts that were eating all the grapes (aka wine). That’s a giant locust he has in his pitchfork.  His celebration takes place on March 16,  the day before St. Patrick’s Day - to give the Finns more time to celebrate.
