President Garfield’s Home in Mentor, Oh
On our way out of Ohio we stopped in to visit the home of President Garfield. He was only president for a mere four months before he was shot by an assassin. I did not know much about him before visiting but after visiting this site I truly believe that had he survived he would have done great things for our country. His rags to education story is compelling. As is the fact that he was the first and still only sitting member of the House of Representatives to win the presidency. He only found his name on the ballot for president after the republican party could not agree on a candidate at their convention.
His home was marvelously restored for $12M by the Park Service up to and including the wallpaper in the ceilings.
After he succumbed to his wounds friends of the family started a campaign to raise money for his widow Lucretia and his five young children. Citizens raised over $ 300,000 for the family that enabled his wife to remodel the home to the size it is now. Great ranger who really knew all about the house and the family that once lived here. Wonderful stop if you are ever in these parts.
