Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial in Put-In-Bay, OH
Well as you know Phil loves his boats and this location also allowed him to visit a famous battle he had to study at the Naval Academy.
We (including Ricky) boarded our ferry for the 18 minute ride out to the island. Even Ricky enjoyed the wind in his ears.
When you arrive on the small island you have several options for transportation- walking (it was 2.5 miles to the Perry site so opted not to walk), rent a golf cart for $120, take a cab or the bus. We took the bus 6$ each round trip to downtown.
We visited the memorial which has great movies and dioramas that explain how the battle for Lake Erie dominance unfolded. Phil said he wished the movie explaining the battle existed when he was in college. This site commemorates those who died in the naval battle that led to the British surrender and the end of the War of 1812.
There is a huge tower built in 1914 where the bodies of the six naval officers who died are laid to rest. 3 American and 3 British. You can no longer climb to the top due to Covid.
After touring the memorial we walked through town and had lunch then we walked through the main park on the island. Found some interesting statues.
