Mackinac Island

We took the ferry to see Mackinac Island. It sits between the upper peninsula and the rest of Michigan. The ferry takes only 20 minutes from St. Ignace on the upper peninsula. We had a great day to go explore. There were lots of day visitors but the numbers were down because no Canadians are able to come across the border.

There are no cars allowed on the island. The only modes of transportation are walking, biking or horse drawn carriages.  The lines to rent bikes were huge so we opted for the horse drawn carriage. I’m

The main town is really just a tourist trap. Lots of tshirt shops, fudge shops and restaurants.  The interior of the island is a state park. We saw an old cemetery that is part of the state park that is that final resting spot for many soldiers who fought  to protect the fort on the island during the war of 1812.

Fun fact: because there are 15 unknown soldiers buried in the cemetery on the island a US flag flies at half staff year round to honor the unknown soldiers.  There are three other US locations and one foreign location where flags fly at half staff year round - do you know where they are?

At the end of the day we took the ferry back to the UP.  We saw the great Mackinac Bridge in the distance. Tomorrow we’d be driving over it to get to the lower portion of Michigan for the next phase of our trip.
