Hiking Tahquamenon Falls

The hike Julie suggested was in a state park not very far from our campground. We decided to hike from the upper falls down to the lowers falls, it’s a 4 mile hike that usually takes about 2 hours. The best thing is that a shuttle service is provided to bring you back to your car after you finish so you don’t have to hike back. There were lots of people at both ends but almost no one did the entire hike. We had the trail pretty much to ourselves. The upper fall is the more impressive.

The upper two miles of the hike are in dense woods that follow the water down to the lowers falls.  Moose have been known to be spotted here but we saw none.  There are lots of ups and downs but lots of bridges to help with the very muddy sections.  It is so quiet.  The water looks like tea. So much tannin in the water turns it that color.

In the winter these trails we were on are covered with snow. But the trails are used for both snow shoe and cross country ski trails.  Can’t imagine doing these trails in snow shoes.

As we approached the lower falls we started seeing more visitors and hearing rapids leading up to the falls.

The signs at the lower falls all state do not to go in the falls but many visitors came with plans to go in and they did.  Near the lower falls you can rent kayaks and go over to the island that sits between the two lower falls.   There were lots of families enjoying the great weather.  We had a great day.
