Apostle Islands National Seashore


We tried to get on a tour of the islands but they were all sold out but the weather was so bad, all tours to the islands were canceled.  

We visited the visitor center but it was closed as was the other visitor center which is up on the Lake Superior coast.  I think the Park Service severely understaffed and has no one yo man it’s visitor centers.  Glad we stopped in at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center. 

Instead we decided to do the hike to the one location in the park where you can see the caves.  We headed out to Meters beach to do the 4 mike hike - with the dog - to see the sea caves.  


 





We walked about half way and realized Ricky wound not be able to make it the full 4 miles. So we turned around. A 12 year old cockapoo with arthritis could not take all the up and down steps. So we did the scenic loop through the park so we could see the islands from the shore. 




We had a great day exploring the shore of Lake Superior.  We stopped for lunch in Cornucopia, WI. We had the best site fish and we bought fine smoked wire fish which is AMAZING.  Pointing Trivia- this town has the northern most post office in the state of Wisconsin- who knew.

 On our way to Polson, MT, we stopped at Grant-Kohrs National Historic Site. It’s right on HWY 90 as you are traveling E/W in Montana.  This ranch preserves the lifestyle of the American cattle rancher from the late 1880s. The ranch has a restored main house and over 80 out buildings but alas, like many places we have encountered, the park service is short staffed and not all locations are opened.  The ranch explains the cowboy rancher and how he was able to get cattle to market.  It’s a great location for kids.

Downtown Brigham City, UT

 After our great lunch we set out to find some local thrift stores. Blocks are very long in Brigham City. Our map took us by the beautiful temple in the center of town.  It has very manicured gardens all around.  There were many fruit trees. We saw fully ripened cherries and Granny Smith apples. Sure hope they harvest all that fruit and donate it somewhere.  The architecture reminded us of what we saw in Prescott and Flagstaff, AZ.  Lots of brick buildings built in the 1890s.  Some remodeled and some that need some serious attention. But overall Brigham City is a very well kept city.  We didn’t buy anything at the thrift stores.

We Made it to the “Show Me State”

 After leaving the Buffalo National River we proceeded north on our quest to reach Branson, Mo.  I’ve wanted to visit this town for several years. I’m sorry if I offend anyone but we will never have to visit Branson again. Once the town of country shows, now it is no different than a seaside resort that caters to families who have a week to spend with their kids on vacation. Whenever we told fellow travelers we were headed to Branson EVERY ONE OF THEM RESPONDED “THE TRAFFIC.”   Turns out traffic is so bumper to bumper on the “Main St” - Route 76, the city has come up with three color coded routes around town to try and bypass the main drag. We took the jeep out to see the sites and all it is is restaurants, arcades, kid friendly Museums and shows fit for kids. Didn’t even take any pictures.  The next day we headed out and we had some time to kill before we got to our next camp for the night so we found a Passport stamp location along our route and decided to check it...
