We made it to our first “new” state - Arkansas.

  We settled in to the KOA outside Philadelphia so we could make day trips to visit places in the area. We try to find a spot that allows us to be centrally located and then we can take the jeep to explore. Our campground was not all that close to any spot we visited but it was centrally located to many. One more comment about the campground. It was really nice but we visited about a week after the destruction of Hurricane Ida hit this region.  Widespread flooding had literally washed out a bridge a block from our campground and the standing water     left in its wake had become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. We had to hide in our RV to avoid being eaten alive. This was by far the worst  spot for mosquitoes of our entire trip.  Our first day trip was to see the site of Washington’s encampment at Valley Forge. Big Hole National Battlefield, MT

 We set out to visit this National Battlefield because it was only about an hour from our campground and there was a stamp. The drive through the mountains was beautiful and very sparsely populated. More cattle than people. The skies were very dark and the whole time we were driving we were waiting for the downpour. We went over a mountain pass that was over 7,000 feet. We finally arrived at about 3:00 pm just as the rain started.  This battlefield is not like others we have been to. Much of the park sits on Native American land and because so many Native Americans perished at the battle here it is hallowed ground. There is no driving tour. You must hike the trails. Since it was pouring and there was lightning and we had the dog who was not allowed we opted for just looking at the visitor center.
