The 5th Great Lake-Ontario
We decided to take a leisurely drive due north of Lake Geneva to check out the lighthouse at Sodus Bay and stick our feet in our last Great Lake. The driving up here in upstate New York is basically lush rolling hills with lots of small farms dotting the landscape. When we made it to Sodus Point we parked at a baseball field and walked down to the lake over some sand dunes. All of the Great Lakes are huge and if you didn’t know it they could be an ocean. Lots of waves and tough surf on windy days. But today was beautiful.
We stuck our feet in the ocean and would have liked to just sit on the beach but Ricky can’t just sit. He insists on chasing - and barking - at waves. So for the peace of others who were enjoying a great day we started to walk around the neighborhood. There was a Beetles tribute band performing at a park up the street but we opted to find food. As we walked toward the bay side and the bars we came upon a small cemetery that actually has a headstone for a sailor who had fought in the War of 1812. Reminded me of my parents last home which had a historical cemetery across the street.
After checking out the old headstones we walked over to town. We found a local bar with outdoor seating to accommodate the dog. There were lots of motorcycles on the road enjoying the weather and quite a few joined us on the outdoor patio to listen to a really good band. When they started their first set and the first song was “ Sister Golden Hair” I knew I would like them.
Then we headed back to our campground near Lake Seneca to get ready to pack up for our next move.
